“Why does it matter? I have training, skills, experience, and a track record of accomplishments.”

The question to start this off is, “What’s your foundation?”

Here’s why it matters:
Your foundation → balanced consistency → earns trust → powerful leader.

Similar to the concrete under your house, the foundation of your business life is the most important part, because everything else is built on top of it.

There are hundreds of very good tools, diagrams, flowcharts, models, techniques, cheat codes, and Jedi mind tricks that will definitely help you be an excellent manager, small business owner, or employee.

But a unifying base that ties them all together has benefits that go deeper than simply “getting stuff done.”

“Foundation” is a single word metaphor for the phrases above like, “unifying base,” and “ties them all together,” plus we could add words such as, “enduring”, “support,” and “stable.”

When you know and operate on your Foundation, all your skills/experience, etc. combine with best practice “tools”, in a more consistent manner. Over time that builds the department, business, or organization into a stronger, tighter, more dialed in enterprise that both staff and clients grow committed to.

Leadership is a word I haven’t said yet, and knowing your Foundation is a critical piece in the leadership puzzle. Emotional intelligence and charisma will take you far, but combine those with a clear foundation and that’s when you can become even more effective.

People will see your consistency, and you already know that is a building block for trust. Folks follow the leaders they trust, not simply the ones with a “manager” or “owner” title.

And this brings us right back to the original question, “why does it matter?”

Your foundation → balanced consistency → earns trust → powerful leader → better business for everyone.

To be clear, this isn’t, “follow my flashy new framework and ignore what the popular LinkedIn gurus are saying.” Keep listening to those folks, continue building your skillsets, but place all of that on a solid base where they can integrate and excel in the best possible way.

This post is a preamble to a series I’m starting on the component parts of your foundation, why it’s worthwhile, and the benefits that show up in daily work.
